about

more grounded in song pieces than nz rowman.
sarasong lyrics modified from poem given to me
by sarah snell. sarah & i have not spoken to one
another in six years. diagetic momentums aside,
racecardriver e.p. attempts a story of sound, and
not word; a story of labour of love, and not work.
i forget when it was recorded. sometime in june.
after being nearly hit by a car i decided to post it
& threw in a cover of an early prince song, more
as a moment of truth than anything. this song is
also covered by cyndi lauper in the 80's, & by a
little rock band fu yu before i ever met you. if you
see sarah, tell her i said hello #inmemoryofvictor

I hope you will overlook
the reference
to Charles Dickens

(it is a book
I have never pretended
to have read)—

unless you find it amusing;
the kind of humor
I’d use

to impress a smart girl
or a professor
of English,

or as a mere foil for my musings
on
‘what it means to be (a) contemporary (male)'.

(I want you to realize
I am not
as bright as your shoe-shines

nor your reflection) ...looking
for old newspapers in one of the city-
blue recycling bin clusters

presently filling with snow
that wets the soles of our shoes
as we do not hold hands

at the crossing of East 8th and Pres-
ident Truman (Trinidad, AK
, February, 2008) on our way

to make ridiculous peace downstairs
with neighbors
inside your stucco’d single room

(sandwiched as it is with flurries
between rains thirty-
three and thirty-four)

b.

I am hardly beyond reproach
but still
resist rising above

an as-little-
work-as-possible
approach.

*

I . (I
am . must
tempted . confess)

at every impasse
to simply toss
a buffalo'd nickel or dime

if only to watch it lift,
suspend,
then spin in the air—

if only for some chance
encounter
to draw me away

from the silence
constrained in its metallic,
mental drone.

age 19 or 20: incomplete thought on
purpose: to wait for the right time or
for the right girl to minimize and
focus on and explore and pursue

before dropping classes to cope
with the immanence of her mortality
her flesh to become lost inside of
someone else's Nineveh whale

*

b.

each question billets a particular shade
of the many-colored coat he wears
while making the rounds between

bookstore and shootout at
incandescent street lamp
accordingly in bloom

with a saddlebag slingshot
counting out loud every stone
ground grain of Missouri river stone sand

*

c.

how will it progress?
where will our hero find himself?
will he die a pauper or a prince?

by the way, did you ever find my lighter?

*

d.

there may yet be a draft to this story
that exists to include

a time when I respond to your requests,
when you will not again refuse;

when I once more will ride the crests
of your fortuitous receding wave.
