about

the sound of one hand clapping is built around song pieces
improvised with alex moomey & a script idea i had for a play.
the play didn't ever happen, though i kept my notes. with the
exception of one track on one song, the two guitar tracks that
alex & i recorded are intact on a single cassette dated 23/06,
that would be june 23rd of 2003. i didn't play these tapes any
until around 2013 when my grandmother brought me boxes i
had kept in her basement storage. i was very excited with the
fidelity of the tapes. i miss my fourtrack & all that we had done
that was in various stages of development. the sound of one
hand clapping perhaps captures me returning to the sounds
of more than one set of hands single-handed, a one handed
man. this cassette in particular is interesting to me in that it is
thematic. the one hand clapping refrain runs throughout until
it shifts into an early run through of stephen's song, complete
with one of alex's leads. the remainder of the piece contains
a lengthy keyboard experiment with a present-day echo akin
to something pierre boulez composed for a clarinet & clarinet
recording accompaniment titled dialogue de l'ombre double,
which i believe translates to dialogue of the double shadow,
but which may also pun in spanish and occitan as dialogue
of the body double or dialogue of the two brothers perhaps.
i hope this is the case because i like the idea of the secret
sharer in joseph conrad's tale of the duality of man. alex &
my collaboration was fruitful for me. these are tapes i return
to again and again. i hope that it may impact you similarly in
some small way. and thank you.
